1. Sell or Give It Away
A clean couch with no rips, stains, or pet damage can often be sold or given away online in a day or two. Take clear photos, list the measurements, and say whether the buyer needs to bring help and a truck.
2. Donate It
Many thrift stores and charities accept furniture in good condition, but most will turn down couches with tears, stains, odors, or broken frames. Call ahead and ask whether they take sofas and whether they offer pickup.
3. Use the City of Fresno Bulky Item Pickup
Couches are on the accepted list for the city's free one-time bulky item pickup, available once a year to City of Fresno residential trash customers. You request it by calling 311, the city calls back within seven business days with a date, and you set the couch at the curb no more than 36 hours ahead. You do have to get it to the curb yourself. Full rules are on our Fresno bulky item pickup page.
4. Haul It Yourself
If you have a truck, the city's Free Dump Events at CARTS (3457 S. Cedar Ave.) accept couches and other bulky household items from City of Fresno trash customers, with a limit of one full-size pickup load. Bring your utility bill or Proof of Eligibility Form and a state ID.
5. Pay for Couch Removal
Hiring a hauler makes sense when the couch is upstairs, too heavy to move, part of a bigger cleanout, or needs to be gone before the city can schedule you. Sleeper sofas and sectionals are much heavier than they look because of the metal frames and extra pieces.
