Cedar Avenue Recycling and Transfer Station (CARTS)
CARTS, at 3457 S. Cedar Ave., Fresno, CA 93725, is where the City of Fresno sorts and recycles bulky waste. It hosts the city's Free Dump Events for City trash customers (one full-size pickup load, with a utility bill or eligibility form and a state ID) and is a Bye Bye Mattress site for free mattress and box spring drop-off. For everyday self-haul hours and fees, check with the City of Fresno before you go.
American Avenue Disposal Site
Fresno County's regional landfill is the American Avenue Disposal Site, 18950 W. American Ave., Kerman, CA 93630. Hours are Monday to Friday 7 AM to 3 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 2:30 PM, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. A high-visibility safety vest is required. Construction and demolition debris is accepted only in loads under 3 cubic yards, or when it makes up less than 20% of a mixed load. Fees are on the county's tipping fee schedule, and cards carry a 2.3% convenience fee. Phone: (559) 600-4259.
Hazardous Waste
Paint, chemicals, motor oil, batteries, and similar items don't go to the dump. Take them to the Fresno County Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1327 W. Dan Ronquillo Dr. (free for residents, Fridays and Saturdays, 9 AM to 3 PM). Clovis residents can also use the Clovis Drop-Off Center at 79 N. Sunnyside Ave. See what junk removal companies don't take.
Is Hauling It Yourself Worth It?
For one truckload of easy-to-lift items, self-hauling can save money. Once you add a trailer or truck rental, gas, the drive, the time loading and unloading, and the disposal fee, a flat-rate pickup is often close in cost, and the crew does the lifting.
